Greg Hall, columnist, photographer, pain in the ass of local media, and “software guy” has passed away suddenly.
He was an idol and mentor to me, and I am beyond heartbroken to hear of his sudden passing.
I have a dozen Greg Hall stories. Our paths crossed several times through his work at The Star. We shared column space at the Platte County Landmark. We also shared a love of local media. It was shrowded in peppering media types, but make no mistake, it was love for local sports and local sports media that drove Greg.
There were three columns you had to read every morning in the Star. Sure, Joe Posnanski and Jason Whitlock were the no brainers, but Greg’s Off the Couch column was a must read for me.
I’ll be brief now to get this out. But I feel his signature piece was a poem called “Baseball Is…” It is linked here on his old website. I will also capture it in case the site goes down at some point.
What is even more special is the fact that he got national baseball broadcasters – many of which have also passed away – to record a version of it which is played from time to time on Royals Broadcasts.
It is linked below.
Before you click it, however, I’d like you to consider making a donation to a local high school sports program. Greg was incredibly passionate about high school cross country spending much of the last decade writing and photographing X-Country meets. An avid runner, Greg would appreciate you throwing a few bucks to help local athletes.
As I have more information from his family if there is a chosen foundation, I’ll let you know. But in the meantime, please consider making a small donation to something, somewhere, in his name, today.
Now… Enjoy… Baseball Is, by the late Greg Hall.
Rest in peace.
